Creed & Our Father on Tuesday evening, April 5, 2011 (eVersion here - http://melekali.50megs.com/) Prepared 4/5/2011

Extemporaneous Opening Prayer (there will be much extemporaneous teaching and discussion/questions by all)

Our Father Essentially in 4 parts – 1) Father, 2) Kingdom, 3) God’s will & 4) Our needs

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.

An intimate prayer to OUR Father, we state that

ü  He is in heaven

ü  God’s name is hallowed or holy.

Why is this important and what do we gain from this?

Thy Kingdom come.

We are to be working for God’s kingdom.  This implies that God is our King.  How do we do this?

Thy Will be done, on earth, as it is in Heaven.

God’s will must be done on earth as a mirror to God’s will being done in heaven for all things were made by the Father through the Word, Jesus.  What does this mean?

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

We ask for a couple crucial things here

ü  Daily bread

ü  Forgiveness which is contingent upon us forgiving others

ü  Requesting the God not lead us into to temptation but that God deliver us from evil.

How does this affect our daily lives?

Amen.

The most common Hebrew word in the existence of the English speaking world which everyone uses in its transliterated form, it is a declaration of affirmation & means So Be It, Truly, I Believe, I Consent, I Agree.

Nicene Creed Essentially in 4 parts – 1) Father, 2) Son, 3) Spirit & 4) Our belief, acknowledgement & hope

Question to ponder: Why is each section important?

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

Three things

ü  God is one (Shema [from the transliterated Hebrew: Sh'ma Yis'ra'eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad] – Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One): Trinity (3 persons or essences in 1 God or imaged in the making of the human person, cf. Gen 1:26-27 & 1 Thess 5:23)

ü  The Father is the Almighty

ü  Made heaven and earth – all that is see and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us men and our salvation *He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man*. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures: He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Note – *---* indicates where we bow our head at the reciting of this prayer in mass.  Why do we do this?

Jesus Christ is

ü  The Lord, only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father

ü  God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God

ü  Begotten, not made

ü  One in being with the Father

ü  All things were made through Jesus

ü  Jesus came to save us and so he

o    Came down from heaven and became man

o    Born of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit

o    Suffered the passion

o    Rose from the dead on the third day fulfilling the Scriptures

o    Ascended into heaven and seated at the right hand (position of honor) of the Father

ü  He will come again to judge us all

ü  His kingdom will have no end

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

Holy Spirit is

ü  The Lord

ü  Giver of life

ü  Proceeds from the Father and the Son

ü  Worshipped & glorified with the Father and the Son

ü  Speaking through the prophets

We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

The four marks of the Church

ü  One

ü  Holy

ü  Catholic

ü  Apostolic

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

It is by baptism that we enter into the family of God and are forgiven our sins

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

We have hope to be raised from the dead after we die to live in the world to come

Amen.

Same as the Our Father.

Apostles Creed Essentially in 4 parts – 1) Father, 2) Son, 3) Spirit, 4) Critical beliefs: Catholic Church, Communion of Saints, Forgiveness of Sins & Resurrection & Everlasting Life

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Let them read it and then bring up differences for discussion.

There are many other creeds, such as the Athanasian Creed (Athanasius was an early Church Father, about 293-373, & Bishop of Alexandria), which have been written by individuals throughout the history of the Church.
